The case study considered here is that of an evaporator for the synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, where an energy-demanding distillation step is optimized and scheduled taking into account the forecasted availability of energy from renewables. The goal is to optimize the utilization of the energy from the renewable sources, without violating process and product constraints. A method is outlined to assess whether predictive demand-side management is a viable option and how to integrate it into the operation of a batch process based on the process characteristics. ER -
